Potty Training Caveats- Dont Start Too Soon

The First Reason: For one thing, child development experts are concerned that previous generations of parents were putting too much pressure on their children to potty train early. Children were often being punished for not learning to use the toilet.

Another Reason: Behind the delayed potty training are disposable diapers. Disposable diapers are more absorbent than cloth diapers and less uncomfortable for a child when soiled or wet. They are more convenient for parents who want to get away from the laundering of cloth diapers.

Remember, it is not recommended that you use negative reinforcements (verbally, punishments or spankings) when the child has an accident or wets the bed. Positive reinforcement as simple as a hug, sticker or praise for successful potty event is much more effective. Taking cues from your child will make the process of potty training go more smoothly for everyone.

If Potty Training Signs of Readiness Are Missing. Not every sign of readiness needs to be there. If you already notice a few signs, your child may be ready and willing to start using the potty.

After A Few Potty Training Attempts. It's wise to back off if your child still wants to resist using the toilet.

Praise Other Independence. In other areas of independence, such as feeding or dressing themselves, be sure to offer praises.

Trying Again After a Few Weeks or Months Go By. For some children, it might be best to wait if they're about to experience, or have experienced, a major disruption in their life. These disruptions may include events such as the birth of a new sibling, a move to a new home, or a divorce or death in the family. Such situations may disrupt the learning process and may even cause temporary setbacks.

Your Pediatrician Can Help With Potty Training. If any concerns come up before, during, or after toilet training, talk with your pediatrician. Often the problem or problems are minor and can be resolved quickly, but sometimes physical or emotional causes will require treatment. Your pediatrician's help, advice, and encouragement can help make toilet training easier. Also, your pediatrician is trained to identify and manage problems that are more serious.

Theres A Lollipop On Your Bottom (and Other Terms Of Endearment)
"I took care of Callie," my three-year-old announced.Callie had been starting with that little whine that babies adopt to alert mothers and sisters that their new crawling tricks have them wedged behind the furniture. But the whining had stopped--rather suddenly it seems in retrospect."Thanks, Cassie. You are such a big help," I said. "How did you manage that?""I got her a beer."Sure enough, Callie was still wedged behind the table, but now she was happily gumming the cold smooth side of a Newcastle.Because I wanted to think that Cassie went for the ...(related: Parenting)

Entering Their Imaginative World
In dealing with children with autism spectrum disorders, its all about relationship. These children are within a realm where they feel and respond much differently than others. There has been much focus on trying to eliminate certain behaviors or to evoke particular responses in children which actually become rote and repetitive for them without context. One of the goals in aiding these children should be in helping them find meaning. In order to do this we must be willing to not look at the child as broken, unable to respond, or even unable to communicate. These children DO communicate, however they are not always able to manipulate their senses to communicate in the typical ways of other children. As a result, they can become easily frustrated and trapped. The therapist must enter their imaginativ...(related: Parenting)

What Values Are We Giving Our Children?
On a bright Sunday morning, a couple of weeks ago, I went to South London to receive a message sent from Nigeria. As I entered the lift, I saw a couple, apparently in their early 20s, smoking marijuana while their young son sat comfortably in his push-chair. As I was going down through the staircase, I saw another three children in their teens smoking marijuana and drinking beer. The above situation depicts the state of our children abroad. What values are we giving our children in foreign lands? Is it the environment or our work that forbids us from giving our children good values, home training, love and care? Or did we dump the values we were brought up with at the airport as we boarded the aircraft to England?Agreed, many parents work har...(related: Parenting)

Avoid Weight Problems In Children
Although, not a well publicized statistic, childhood obesity has more than tripled in the past two decades-15% of American children are obese according to the U.S. Obesity Task Force. With TV commercials bombarding children's minds with 'junk food' options and fast food restaurants enticing parents to 'take a break' from tedious cooking by offering toys or a play room, staying on a healthy eating plan is difficult. In addition, playing outside is a distant thought if children are accustomed to using T.V. the computer, and a plethora of video games a...(related: Parenting)
